COurtney asked:

What could a medical professional do to help the patient understand? How could you ensure that the patient does understand exactly?

They could explain their diagnosis and recommended treatment in lay terms that the average person will understand. And then they can ask, “Do you have any questions that I can answer for you about this condition?” Many people are so intimidated by doctors that they meekly accept a diagnosis without asking to have it written down or explained. Then they go to some online forum and ask, “The doctor says I have Crohns disease. What is it? Am I going to die?” So many people are so frightened of hospitals and cancer that they’d rather ignore a potentially serious condition and hope it goes away than visit a doctor and actually get some answers.
