Because they were American citizens, and regardless of political views, they were in need of those things. The military is a branch of our government, to be used for our defense and for our welfare. That does not mean that the military shares the dark political objectives of the central government. Men and women in uniform are sworn to defend the Constitution. And they serve proud and do just that. In the Vietnam war era, many took their dislike out on the uniformed soldier. He was not to blame, he was just doing what his orders told him to do. Vietnam era servicemen served with the same dedication, distinction, and courage as any soldier in any war this country ever fought. Yet they returned home to a government that did not want to recognize them, and a faction of the people who harassed, spit on them, and cursed them and the uniform. Years after the war ended, many employers asked if a man was a Vietnam Veteran before hiring. Some would hire you as a Vet, some considered you as "too controversial", and would not hire you. I do not recall the Army flying in supplies to Woodstock, but I know that if there was a need of the American citizen, they had the logistics, and did the job..... And they were sworn to defend the same Constitution that gave the right to protest. They were Americans helping Americans.
