Where can my mother get free diabetic testing supplies?

medical supplies
up_all_night asked:

She is 50 and just found out she has diabeties. She does not have medical insurance where she works and is not on medicare or medicaid. I have done a little research about this online and everything I found, you had to have insurance or be on medicare. She has neither, and the test strips she needs cost $50 a pack. With the medications she is already paying for, it could create a hardship. Thanks for any advice you might have.

she can go to her county hospital and see a doctor and then they will start sending her medication in the mail free of charge. desperate

If she is working, there may be a “free clinic” in your area that would help…. If you don’t know where to start, you might try calling the Health Department in your area and asking them about medical services for workers without insurance.

    Also, you might try

This site has a lot of helpful info for both you and your mother. appalachianchild

This is an awful situation that your mother is in . She should call the ADA in your area..Talk to her doctor about a free glucose monitor Her doctor does have resources. Her pharmacist may be able to help her. Look on the box of a glucose meter to see if there is a 1800 number for the manufacturer call it ,alot of times the company will issue a free meter and test strips. If you can get a meter for free you’re saving alot, Prices of test strips vary.but you need strips that are comptatible with the machine that you are using Vicki A

Companies will provide physicians with free glucometers as the real profit is in the test strips which are typically very expensive as you have noted. Free test strips for an employed individual are very hard to come by. The company who made the glucometer will have a website and they will offer free strips but only to those who financially qualify which generally means that if you are employed that you do not qualify. Another option is to go to the website for the American Diabetes Association as they may be able to put you in touch with a kind company. john e russo md

Go to Target and get an Easy Pro Meter, the meter costs $8.99 and the strips are $21.99 for fifty. The pharm. companies give away their meters to trap you into paying for their overpriced supplies. There are cheaper ones out there at Target and Wal-mart, they work just as well. The cheaper ones won’t come with all the bells and whistles like the One Touch with all the ways to download graphs on your computer, but what you need is an affordable way to test your blood sugar. It’s essential that this gets tracked, don’t say it can’t be afforded. I personally think I would rather have a lifetime of medical bills than be dead. I’m not trying to be judgmental like that sounds, just realistic. Kathie Emmanuelite
