That paper shuffling adds nothing to the country's productivity. Converting to simple (if doing anything in a simple manner is possible for the gov't) consumption tax would allow the elimination of billions of wasted tax dollars from the budget. What do we do for all those gov't employees who would no longer have jobs? Just keep paying them until they retire, but a little less each year!! (Okay, so there go the savings? Well, some of them, but there are a lot more costs to the bureaucracies than just employee wages.) What they are doing now is 100% unproductive. Pay them for doing nothing? They're already doing nothing usefull!! Most of them would get other jobs, which couldn't be any less productive than what they're doing now. That would add to the GNP and the tax base as more goods and services were created and sold domestically. They could no longer say "vote for me and I'll give you a $500 child tax credit". They could no longer manipulate business practices with tax credits, tax breaks, and subsidies. We would no longer have to pay HR Block $150 every year to figure out the insane mess that is our tax code. It would be a rebirth of freedom for every American.
