What percentage of physicians currently practicing in the US received foreign medical training?
Does the United States drain away the best and the brightest young physicians from developing world countries to supply the need for physicians in the US?
So many young physicians I encounter seem to be foreign born and foreign trained.
Should we build more US Medical Schools to provide more American trained physicians and allow foreign trained physicians to serve the countries and communities that sponsored their educations instead of robbing poor countries of physicians to provide for the needs of a rich country that has not trained enough physicians for its own needs?

In 2003, almost one in four doctors practicing in the United States, or about 180,000 physicians, graduated from medical school in another country.
Yes the US and other (1st world countries) should train their own doctors. However there are a few reasons why this doesn’t happen.
The US runs on making money - it’s expensive to train in Medicine in the states.
Poor people want to be wealthier and if they can get paid lots of money in a 1st world country and support 20 friends and relatives back home, how can you argue against that.
It’s complex isn’t it.
I’m an Aussie who went offshore to train and now Oz are trying to prevent me practicing at home. And they say we are desperate for doctors ! Go figure.
