What are the top ethical gifts available this Christmas?
I’ve seen gifts ranging from water kits and medical supplies, to goats and donkeys. Is there anything new out there for Christmas 2008?

I really like the UNICEF gifts where you can symbolically buy nets for beds, water, farm supplies, art kits, and sports Equipment to be sent around the world.
CPAWS give the gift of wilderness. Which for me is very cool, I’ve gotten their gifts where a friend makes a donation to help protect Canadian wildlife and wilderness.
Free trade coffee and chocolates are easier to get than before and I think will be seen in more stockings than usual.
I know it is hard this holiday season but if you can buy local. Buy products made by crafts people in your home community. I got many of my family items made by people for craft fairs. Home made goods make great gifts.
even for Christmas dinner buying local is getting a big push this year. The way the economy is going it’s important to support local producers and small producers. Ask the grocery store if they stock any locally grown veggies. Most stores put up a sign to mark local goods. Try to find a local turkey, if you can try to find a hobby farm turkey. If you live close to a rural community this will be easier. These turkeys are often better cared for and taste better.
A tradition started was a twist on secret Santa. Each of us draw a name and we would buy a gift for that person something we knew they would love. Then we would donate it to the Salvation army to give to a family or person in need this year.
Soup kitchens and shelters are finding it really hard this year so instead of Secret Santa at work why not pool money for a local mission or soup kitchen.
For animal loves instead of buying too many toys and fattening treats for your pets why not look into some of the donation gifts at the shelter. Many animal rescues are catching onto the symbolic gifts.
While most people find it tacky I support re gifting some things. It’s green after all. Things I have passed on to others or donated to charity are boxes of chocolates. While I love getting them I usually get to many so I give them to the food bank or I give them to a friend or family member who may need some cheering up after the holidays. Another thing I think is acceptable to Re gift is bath product kits. I have allergies to all of it. so I thank the person who gave it to me and try to pass it along to the women’s Centre or freecycle it away. It’s not that I’m ungrateful but I think if you receive something that will only end up in the trash you should try to make it useful for someone else.
