Star Trek Medical and Communication Questions?

medical supplies
sephienie asked:

Hello!

I’m working on a Star Trek story that I developed watching the last movie, most of it takes place in the medical bay, however, I’m not entirely sure what everything is called in terms of medical supplies and communication technology.

For instance, in the new movie, when they would do the ship wide communications on that computer monitor looking screen that could be paused, replayed, etcetera, what is that thing called? What can you do on them? Do Enterprise crew members have screens like those in their personal quarters, video phones?

None of the episodes I catch on tv really answer my questions.

Are all beds in the sick bay out in the open? Are there private areas of medical bay?

Are their devices to assist the doctors if they’re working under attack? Most times when you watch the show, people get thrown around quite easily when the ship takes hits, what happens in medical bay? If you’re being operated on, are you just out of luck or is there a gravity that will kick in?

Memory Alpha and Beta have a lot of info but few pictures when it comes to this kind of stuff. Any chance of sites that have scenes with labels on them? Like those guide books that come out with movies now that line up the characters are point out various items of interest? PotC had one that said about the bead on Jack’s forehead was his piece of eight, and the tattoo was a brand of east india, those kind of guide books?

Help please???

Sadly, very little in the new Star Trek movie has anything to do with the original series or previous movies. For instance, the computer monitor in sick bay. Most departments on the ships and crew quarters have monitors…and they are called monitors on the shows. They are for communication as well as accessing the ship’s computer and libraries.

The most used devices in sickbay is the medical tricorder, hypo-spray and the bio-scan bed (called a micro-diagnostic table in the original movies.) I don’t recall ever seeing private beds in sickbay in any of the shows. But according to Mr Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise, the sickbay drawings seem to show dividers between the beds.

Voyager and the Next Generation have the best scenes and information regarding sickbay….
