I have taken my 2 year old daughter there. You just have to be aware of your surroundings as you do when you travel to any country. It will be a wonderful experience for a 12 year old. My daughter and I will be going back in October and we stay in Guatemala City. I think it is safe. I have taken my 2 year old daughter there. It's pretty safe but it depends pretty much the area you are visiting. The city is cool but sometimes and the departments (area divisions) tend to be kinda unsafe sometimes. My rating: 7 out of 10. The dangerous part of Guatemala is the city and the places near tyhe border of El Salvador, Honduras and specially Mexico.
