One can train in person at a vocational school or they can train online w/ a vocational school. For billing only, you usually do not need 2 years experience. For medical coding in a doctor's office you also do not need 2 years experience. Hospital coders need experience and usually high level certification through AAPC or AHIMA. To code for a local doctor's office, you simply need the vocational training. If you've never taken a formal medical billing and/or medical coding/billing program, I suggest that you start there. Your experience will be extremely helpful and you'll move through training quickly.
